HAIR AND MAKE UP

Everyone benefits from a bit of sprucing up. Hair and make up artists help to make you look exceptional and feel your best. On set they tame fly-aways, powder the shine and keep dry lips at bay. Natural makeup is key, and the people linked below are experts. Contact these artists directly and in advance for rates and bookings:

A note for men: Fellas, discuss with your agent as to whether you should shave for your headshots (I don’t airbrush out moustaches). Generally speaking, rocking a bit of stubble shows you could grow a beard. You don’t need the full Ned Kelly to prove it.

I also encourage men to use a hair and makeup artist. If you don’t want to use one, no problem, but go the extra mile in getting your skin and hair into great shape. Use moisturiser, use sun protection, conceal blemishes, cut your hair a week in advance, maybe even buy a hair mask, and drench your lips in pawpaw ointment for the 24 hours before you see me. You’re making an investment in yourself and your career.

WHAT TO WEAR

Actor Conor Leech

Knowing what to wear can feel overwhelming. With the following tips and good preparation, you’ll be able to make choices that don’t just flatter you but make you pop on camera.

Remember, your outfit choices are for the purpose of framing your face. In most cases, the outfits shouldn’t be drawing much attention to themselves but instead directing attention toward and complementing your face, features and colouring.

• Fitted clothes work best for headshots. Buying a size down can often help. Or bringing bull clips to pin things back.

Know your colours by using the great videos below and HERE. Clean bold colours in flattering, fitted cuts work. White is usually best avoided.

• Timeless and classic wins over ‘on trend’.

• Research what necklines flatter you and frame your face best. Remember that we will likely not see the whole garment, so the neckline is critical.

• Avoid logos, slogans, out of shape, frayed, old or stretched necklines.

• Plan your outfits precisely but bring a selection in case something doesn’t work on camera.

• Bring clothes that are clean and ironed or dry cleaned and on hangers. Don’t stuff them in a bag.

• Use my website as a reference for what works.

• Imagine you’re dressing for an audition to play the best version of you.

TIPS ON HEADSPACE FOR HEADSHOTS

Actress Hannah McKenzie

Actress Hannah McKenzie

Most people don’t love having their photo taken. I can empathise! So before your shoot, during your shoot and after your shoot (when making your selections) it helps to focus on the communicative function of these photos. That is: to present to the world the image of someone who is professional, open, relaxed, warm and intelligent. It’s as simple as that.

By focusing on communicating these things, you can access your charisma and have a headshot that cuts through. Plus, you’ll end up looking like you! And looking like yourself is your greatest point of difference in the ‘marketplace’.

The relaxation you need for a great audition, for walking onto stage or working on set, is no different to the ease and relaxation you need for a great acting headshot. Don’t be bungled by traffic, last minute ironing or other distractions. Leave early and prepare well. Do things that help you to be calm, positive and centred before the shoot; yoga, Alexander technique, meditation, jogging, swimming, stretching, tea drinking, massage.

And finally, please don’t stay out late or drink the night before. Stay off the cigarettes before and during your shoot - they redden your eyes and blanche your skin. Get your sleep and drink lots of water. Good sleep and hydration make you look awesome and feel good.

A NOTE ON WEATHER

Melbourne weather is… challenging.

If the weather looks like it will interfere with your headshot booking, I always endeavor to give you the next available appointment. I try to keep some time up my sleeve each week for contingency. Rescheduling is far better than enduring wind, rain or extreme heat, only to achieve sub-par results.

Cancellation may occur the night before, or even (very rarely!) on the day of your shoot - we are in Melbourne after all. I fully appreciate that it can be frustrating - it’s a drag for me too - but it’s to ensure you get the result you’re after.
